Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by some types of molds and yeasts. These can originate in conditions of adequate heat and humidity in both feed and forage, in fact, there is usually a certain degree of contamination of toxins of this type in both commercial feed and hay, which are not significant enough to produce symptoms, although their presence is undesirable.
Sometimes, the incorrect handling, processing and storage of feed and forage can lead to the proliferation of toxic amounts of mycotoxins, which can have serious consequences in the horse.
The horse can show from liver disease, weight loss, colic, respiratory, gastrointestinal, immunity problems, poor intestinal absorption to neurological symptoms and in more serious cases, the sudden death of the horse.
It is always good to know the degree of mycotoxin contamination in the feed or hay, but if there is a suspicion due to symptoms, an analysis can reveal if there is a presence of mycotoxins, which ones and to what degree.
This analysis provides values of:
- Aflatoxins B1
- Total aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1 and G2)
- Deoxynivalenol
- Fumonisin (B1 and B2)
- Ochratoxin A
- Patulin
- T2 + HT2
- Zearalenone
